The Japanese were shocked!
When we were in Japan working together there was one time when our bosses got a big shock when they went to visit his home. He was crawling around trying to catch his first kid (out of three) who was still an infant.
They were wondering "what the hell are you doing" because in Japanese culture at that time the man is supposed to be a tough working man and the wife is supposed, you know, man the household and be sort of like a domestic slave to their husband and family. He got a big scolding!
Even from then, you knew that MW was the kind of fella that loved his family very much and wasn't afraid to share the load around the home. I still don't know how he did all that because he was very, very busy at that time.
Anyway here's a photo of him looking young and silly in a very classic Japanese outfit, for your entertainment.
Back in OCBC Days...
There was a huge drinking culture among fund managers last time. I mean, we're talking about people who manage multi-million dollar client portfolios and who see their own net worth go up or drop by hundreds of thousands every day.
So there was this time MW, who was our boss then, and the team went out and we all got totally stone drunk and even had a Big Mac eating competition! MW had to be carried back to his car and we got a driver to send him home. It was okay because the next day was casual day and we could go into office a bit later.
I turned up at 9.30am the next day with a big headache but still thinking I was earlier then the others, then got a fright when I saw MW at his desk already. He jokingly asked me "Eh, Mary, why so late?"
Every morning, MW will report for work at 8.30am. The team found out when they came in afterwards that no matter how drunk you get him the night before thinking maybe tomorrow can relax a bit, it looks like he will still report at 8.30am and make sure you do your damn job!
